ING For Something Better

ING supports development through sports

UNICEF South Africa, in cooperation with UNICEF Netherlands and ING Chances for Children, is building sport facilities.

As part of a broader education and sports programme. At more than 800 disadvantage schools in South Africa UNICEF is training teachers locally to become sports coaches and to pass on life skills.

The 'Sport for Development' programme in South Africa has two main objectives:

  • Investing in high-quality education
  • Protecting children from violence and HIV and empowering them

Multipurpose playing facility

  • The nine sports fields will be suitable for playing korfball and football, the most popular sports at the schools.
  • The project will involve clearing existing school sites, levelling playing fields, grassing over playing areas, applying line marking and setting goal posts and perimeter fences
  • The project also involves building a combi-court - a hard court suitable for playing both tennis and netball - for each of the nine school clusters
  • Site surveys are being conducted at the selected schools to establish the availability of space and project costing is also underway

The results we can achieve with your donation

  • 500,000 children are empowered by the sports coaches
  • Less violence at schools
  • Better quality of education
  • Fewer dropouts; children stay in school
  • Fewer new cases of HIV and AIDS infection

In the Shadow of the Stadium in pictures

Around the world all eyes are on the football World Cup in South Africa. UNICEF is taking the opportunity to raise awareness for the 12.7 million South African children who grow up in the shadow of the football stadiums - often under extremely difficult circumstances. We believe that children in South Africa should also have the opportunity to play sports and games in a safe environment.

Children in South Africa face many problems

  • HIV and AIDS
    - more than 3.7 million children have lost one or both parents. Nearly half the time AIDS is the cause
    - 220,000 children under the age of 14 are HIV positive
  • discrimination
  • violence (including sexual abuse); children are the victim in 40 percent of all sexual offences
  • drugs
  • dropping out; one in every four children does not finish primary school
  • teenage pregnancy
  • lack of opportunity to play sports and games
