ING Chances for Children

ING Chances for Children is embedded in our activities in Belgium.

1. Homework School

The "Homework school" project started 4 years ago in Belgium. Its objective is to provide free academic assistance to children from underprivileged districts. The Homework school helps mainly children between 8 and 12. Last year, the organisation was present in 2 schools in St-Josse in Brussels, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after 4 p.m. The Homework school was able to effectively help several pupils over these four years. As an example, 100% of the children following the homework school in 2008-2009 passed their basic certificate (given at the end of primary schooling). This is very promising!

The voluntary teams were inundated with thanks and acknowledgement from the schools' governing bodies, teachers and children. The success of the homework school is such that demand has grown sharply and in order to help all the students, the team needs to draft more volunteers. Most of the volunteers are ING colleagues but the project is open to all. Pensioners are also welcome! The homework school is looking for volunteers to widen its scope for action.

2. Moral sponsorship

The idea is to give moral support to talented, motivated young people from underprivileged areas and to help them in their academic and professional path. It is sometimes difficult for a young person to leave their background and to follow the professional career for which their human and intellectual capabilities seemed best suited, had they been born elsewhere. The role of the sponsor is to provide human support, voluntarily and over time, to a young person selected according to criteria.

3. The creation of CSR committees

Every member of staff can, in their own way, take initiatives which go some way to helping the common good. It is with this in mind that the idea of CSR committees was launched. What is a CSR committee? It is a small group of colleagues, ideally made up of a minimum of 4 people, who decide to meet up with a view to creating an event, the object of which is to respond to certain needs within our society. ING Belgium would like to encourage this type of initiative via financial participation aimed at facilitating and making possible the event's creation.
